According to a recent report by Wired, this custom-built tool, named GSAi, aims to assist employees in drafting emails, creating talking points, summarizing text, and even writing code. The agency, which oversees government real estate and specific IT initiatives, has been facing significant workforce reductions, including the departure of approximately 1,000 employees. Developed with three distinct models—Claude Haiku 3.5, Claude Sonnet 3.5 v2, and Meta Llama 3.2—the chatbot offers users a range of functionalities tailored to their needs. Initially tested among a smaller group last month, GSAi is now accessible to around 1,500 employees, with plans for further expansion. The chatbot's primary objective is to analyze contract and procurement data, thereby improving efficiency in these critical areas. Employees have been instructed to avoid inputting sensitive information such as federal nonpublic data, personally identifiable details, or controlled unclassified information.
The decision to implement GSAi comes at a time when the GSA, like many other federal agencies, has experienced substantial job cuts. Sources revealed that the agency has let go of upwards of 1,000 workers, including around 90 from its technology division.
