The Hawai‘i Ag & Culinary Alliance (HACA) is inviting local food manufacturers who utilize Hawaiian ingredients to apply for its prestigious Cottage Industry to Commercial Enterprise Scholarship. This initiative aims to support and empower entrepreneurs in scaling their value-added food businesses. The upcoming Cohort 6 will provide a select group of participants with essential resources and training to refine their production processes and explore new opportunities.
In May, fifteen chosen individuals will benefit from a $1,000 scholarship towards the $1,500 tuition for Leeward Community College’s intensive 12-week program, ‘Āina to Mākeke. Participants will also gain access to the cutting-edge Wahiawā Value-Added Product Development Center. Here, they can enhance their manufacturing techniques and discover innovative business avenues. Success stories like that of Jina Wye, founder of Okonokai Sea Snacks, illustrate the transformative impact of this program on budding enterprises.
Since its inception in 2023, HACA has awarded 74 scholarships to various professionals across O‘ahu, Maui, Hawai‘i Island, Moloka‘i, and Lāna‘i. By fostering the growth of local value-added products, HACA plays a crucial role in bolstering Hawai‘i's agricultural sector. Denise Yamaguchi, CEO of HACA, emphasizes the importance of supporting local producers to strengthen the state's agricultural industry while expanding the reach of Hawaiian businesses. The recognition received by HACA, including awards for social impact and product innovation, underscores its significant contributions to the community.
This initiative not only provides valuable financial and educational support but also serves as a catalyst for entrepreneurship and innovation within Hawai‘i's food industry. It exemplifies the power of collaboration and investment in local talent, driving economic growth and sustainability. As applications open for Cohort 6, aspiring entrepreneurs have until April 13, 2025, to submit their applications and embark on a journey toward turning their passions into thriving businesses.
