Derek Muller, business manager for battery electric vehicle systems at John Deere, explained that these tractors are designed from scratch using a common platform approach, similar to how automotive companies develop crossovers. This modular design allows for flexibility in tire sizes, axle widths, and even potential alternative fuel sources in the future.

The rear of the tractor retains familiar elements like the three-point hitch and hydraulic connections, ensuring compatibility with existing farm equipment. One of the most striking features is the significantly reduced number of mechanical parts, leading to lower maintenance needs. Farmers will only need to change the hydraulic oil every 2,000 hours, inspect air filters, and perform daily checks. The driving experience has also been simplified, eliminating the clutch pedal and making operation as easy as driving a golf cart. The electric engine runs quietly, providing a smooth and efficient performance.

To support the transition to electric power, John Deere has integrated Kreisel Electric batteries into the tractors. These batteries, which can be configured up to five units per tractor, feature liquid immersion cooling for optimal thermal management. This ensures consistent performance across various weather conditions and enables rapid charging without compromising battery life. Farmers can monitor the tractor’s health and charging status through the John Deere Operations Center, an intuitive digital platform.

While the tractors are still in the prototype phase, John Deere aims to have autonomous, battery-electric tractors available to customers by 2026. The company will continue offering diesel-powered options alongside the electric models, giving farmers the flexibility to choose the best fit for their operations.
