Achieving significant acknowledgment, the Manna Food Project has been celebrated by Feeding America for its exceptional efforts in fostering community connections. Operating within Antrim, Charlevoix, and Emmet Counties, this organization was recently honored with a Network Celebration Award during a national gathering held in Atlanta, Georgia. As part of Feeding America's expansive network encompassing over 200 food banks, Manna stands among six organizations recognized for their superior work in building communities. Amidst an increasing demand for food assistance across their service region, Manna introduced a home delivery initiative to address food insecurity more effectively.

With a growing need for food support in Northern Michigan, the Manna Food Project identified the necessity for innovative solutions. The project’s leadership noted challenges faced by residents, particularly seniors and individuals with disabilities, who were unable to access mobile pantries easily. Initially established at three fixed-income complexes in Petoskey, these mobile pantries aimed to provide essential nourishment directly to those in need. However, initial implementations revealed logistical issues such as heavy food boxes and reliance on neighbors or volunteers for transportation back to apartments.

In response to these challenges, Carrie Klingelsmith, Executive Director of the Manna Food Project, announced adjustments to their approach. A scheduled delivery system was developed, bringing food directly to the doorsteps of residents at the three housing complexes. This shift prioritizes accessibility and convenience for vulnerable populations, ensuring they receive necessary nutritional resources without undue hardship. By collaborating closely with complex managers, Manna identified homebound individuals requiring special attention, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of their services.

The Manna Food Project continuously evaluates its operational areas, striving to enhance food accessibility throughout Northern Michigan. Their success exemplifies the power of community collaboration, made possible through the generous contributions of donors, dedicated volunteer efforts, and strong advocacy networks.
