Maple Street Businesses Face Challenges Amid Ongoing Construction
2025-01-30

The closure of a beloved coffee shop highlights the struggles faced by local businesses in New Orleans due to prolonged infrastructure projects. PJ’s Coffee, a cornerstone of the community since 1978, recently announced its closure after enduring significant disruptions caused by construction on Maple Street. For decades, this establishment served as a gathering place for students and residents alike. However, the continuous development activities have severely impacted its operations, leading to the difficult decision to shut down.

Construction has not only affected PJ’s but has also placed considerable strain on neighboring businesses. Employees and owners from nearby cafes share their experiences of reduced foot traffic and sales plummeting. Gabriella McCleskey, who works at Fresco Cafe across from PJ’s, described how the start of construction on Hillary Street made it nearly impossible for customers to access the area. Similarly, Qasem Rabde, owner of Green Olives Cafe, mentioned having to reduce employee hours due to declining revenue. Both expressed frustration over incomplete work that left streets impassable for extended periods.

In spite of these challenges, many business owners remain resilient and are exploring ways to adapt. While some roads are now paved, the past few years have been marked by difficulties. McCleskey emphasized the importance of community support during tough times, especially when relying on tip-based income. As other establishments face temporary closures due to ongoing work, there is a collective call for solidarity among locals to help these businesses persevere. In the face of adversity, the spirit of unity and perseverance shines through, demonstrating the strength and resilience of the community.
