Medina's State Road Reconstruction: Seeking Solutions to Reduce Financial Burden
2025-01-21

The city of Medina is exploring various avenues to fund the ambitious reconstruction of State Road, a project estimated to cost an impressive $6.6 million. City officials are actively seeking financial support from multiple sources to alleviate this significant expense. During a recent finance committee meeting, City Engineer Patrick Patton highlighted that the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency (NOACA) has already pledged $1.1 million and recently offered an additional $661,000 for the year. This contribution brings the remaining amount needed down to approximately $4.8 million, making the project more feasible.

To further bridge the funding gap, Patton revealed plans to pursue a grant opportunity from the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT). In December, ODOT suggested that Medina apply for a specific program aimed at financing sidewalk improvements and related infrastructure such as curb ramps. If successful, this 90/10 matching grant could cover up to $675,000 of the sidewalk work. The city intends to install 5-foot-wide sidewalks along both sides of the street, starting from Liberty Street and extending to Progress Drive. However, ODOT prefers sidewalks to begin and end at intersections, meaning they would fund the section from Liberty Street to Progress Drive.

With these potential contributions, the city of Medina is steadily progressing toward securing the necessary funds for the State Road reconstruction. By leveraging partnerships and pursuing grant opportunities, the city demonstrates its commitment to enhancing local infrastructure while responsibly managing public finances. Such efforts reflect a proactive approach to community development, ensuring that vital projects move forward despite budgetary challenges.
