Randy Lopez, a former troubled youth who spent much of his childhood in juvenile detention, has discovered the transformative power of boxing. Now, as he transitions from his role as a corrections officer, Lopez is set to open the Loveland Boxing Club, a gym dedicated to offering programs for at-risk youth. While open to all, the facility will focus its evening efforts on providing a safe haven for young people during peak risk hours. Through structured training and mentorship, Lopez hopes to guide these individuals away from destructive paths.
With years of experience running similar programs at the YMCA in Longmont, Lopez found that the demand outgrew the available space. Securing a new location in south Loveland near Loveland Athletics Club, he plans to officially launch the gym on May 1st. His vision extends beyond physical fitness; it includes instilling core values such as dedication, commitment, respect, discipline, and integrity into participants' lives.
Through boxing, Lopez believes he can channel the aggressive tendencies that often lead youths astray into constructive outlets. "Boxing isn't just about fighting," he explains. "It's about teaching kids how to redirect their energy towards something positive." In the gym environment, rivalries dissolve into camaraderie as students learn mutual respect regardless of background or affiliation.
Classes will run daily from early morning until evening, with specific sessions tailored for young attendees between 5 PM and 7:30 PM. These after-school hours are critical times when many adolescents face temptations leading them toward trouble. By engaging them constructively during this period, Lopez aims to prevent potential missteps.
Over two decades ago, Lopez began another initiative called La Familia Boxing Club which successfully guided hundreds—if not thousands—of children through similar principles. One poignant example involves Ashtin Miller, a former student whose life was transformed under Lopez’s care after losing both parents due to addiction and illness. Adopted by Lopez and his wife, Miller continues thriving under their guardianship today at age 16.
As Loveland Boxing Club prepares to welcome its first members, the community anticipates witnessing countless transformations like those achieved through previous efforts. With an unwavering commitment to nurturing future generations, Randy Lopez stands ready to make a lasting impact one punch at a time.
