A significant milestone in the world of opera has been achieved as Opera 5 becomes the latest Company-in-Residence at the Canadian Opera Company (COC). This collaboration is part of a two-year initiative that started in 2016, designed to provide guidance and support to burgeoning local opera entities. Through this program, Opera 5 will have the opportunity to showcase its talents within COC’s Free Concert Series scheduled for April 16 in the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre. A preview of their upcoming chamber opera "Come Closer" will be presented, which delves into themes such as grief, reconnection, and healing following loss due to drug addiction.
Established in 2012, Opera 5 stands out with its dedication to chamber opera productions, innovative works, web series, and mentoring artists. Their repertoire includes celebrated performances like "The Barber of Seville," "Die Fledermaus," and "The Turn of the Screw." The company has also premiered original works such as Cecilia Livingston's "The Masque of the Red Death" and Darren Russo's "Storybook." With this residency, Opera 5 aims to expand its reach and influence, while simultaneously developing its Toronto Opera Festival—a new venture intended to celebrate Canadian talent and compositions.
The alliance between the Canadian Opera Company and Opera 5 signifies a commitment to fostering creativity and supporting emerging artists within the national arts scene. By providing platforms and resources, the COC continues to nurture growth among young opera creators. Opera 5 General Director Rachel Krehm expressed excitement about the mentorship opportunities and emphasized their aspiration to strengthen their presence in the community. Together, these organizations exemplify the spirit of collaboration and innovation that propels the arts forward, inspiring audiences and nurturing the next generation of artistic voices.
