Positive Developments in UF Health and United Healthcare Negotiations
2025-02-01

In a surprising turn of events, negotiations between UF Health and United Healthcare, which had previously seemed at an impasse, have taken a more optimistic path. Dr. Marvin Dewar, CEO of UF Health Physicians, expressed cautious optimism about reaching a resolution regarding reimbursement rates. The discussions are now intensifying, with particular focus on bringing Medicaid patients back into the network. Since September 1st, UF Health has been providing care without receiving payment for various services, amounting to millions of dollars owed. Despite these challenges, UF Health has continued to deliver essential medical services due to the lack of alternative options for patients.

Dr. Dewar highlighted that significant progress is being made towards resolving issues for Medicaid patients, who may see their coverage restored sooner than those with commercial plans. He emphasized the importance of ensuring continuity of care for all patients. UF Health has been delivering necessary treatments and services even though payments from United Healthcare have been delayed or denied. One notable concern raised by Dr. Dewar is the denial of routine mammograms, which he finds unjustified. “There’s no reason for this process to be so cumbersome,” he stated.

United Healthcare maintains that its claim processing is efficient, stating on its website that it pays 98% of all claims. However, UF Health disputes this, citing specific instances where routine care was denied. United Healthcare also mentioned that new transplant cases after September 1st would be out of network, a point contested by UF Health, which argues that the transplant contract is separate and managed by a different entity within United Healthcare.

Both parties remain committed to finding a mutually beneficial solution. A spokesperson for United Healthcare noted that they have held over a dozen meetings in recent weeks, aiming to reach an agreement that balances affordability for consumers and employers while ensuring fair compensation for healthcare providers. The ongoing dialogue signals a positive step forward in addressing the reimbursement challenges faced by UF Health.
