William Brilliant, a first-year Astrophysics PhD student at Cambridge University and an active member of the Quadball club, is optimistic about overcoming these hurdles and building a strong community.

Since leaving the pages of Harry Potter nearly two decades ago, this sport has expanded globally, boasting almost 600 teams across 40 countries. Players engage in tactical gameplay involving scoring volleyballs, executing defensive maneuvers with tackles and dodgeballs, and capturing a flag—replacing the iconic golden snitch. Although players cannot soar through the skies like their wizarding counterparts, they still embrace the spirit of the game by navigating the field on foot while holding broomsticks. Brilliant recalls being drawn into the sport unexpectedly through a promotional event offering free pizza, unaware until then that it was even a competitive activity. He emphasizes the inclusive nature of Quadball, stating that everyone begins at the same level, fostering camaraderie and collective progress within the team.

Quadball continues to grow steadily, supported by dedicated enthusiasts such as Mr. Brilliant who previously participated in Oxford’s chapter. While acknowledging the difficulties in recruiting members amidst numerous other options available to students, he remains hopeful about establishing a robust presence in Cambridge.
