2025-04-28

An inspiring tale unfolds as Carley Jo Goggans embarks on a new chapter of her life, far removed from her initial aspirations. Hailing from Siloam Springs, Arkansas, Goggans has achieved a significant milestone by completing her Master of Music degree in choral conducting at Southern Illinois University (SIU) Carbondale. Her graduation ceremony is set for May 10, marking the culmination of an unexpected yet fulfilling journey.

Goggans initially envisioned herself pursuing a career in international affairs, even contemplating working with the U.S. Department of State. However, her path took a dramatic turn after graduating with honors in international relations, Russian studies, and music from Rhodes College in Tennessee. Following a stint teaching English in Estonia as part of a Fulbright program, she discovered a renewed appreciation for music. This newfound realization led her to SIU, where she immersed herself in choral conducting and found joy in sharing her passion with others. "Music always remained a constant presence in my life," she reflects, acknowledging that embracing this lifelong interest brought clarity and purpose.

At SIU, Goggans flourished under the mentorship of dedicated faculty members such as Susan Davenport, David Dillard, and Richard Kelley. Their guidance not only honed her skills but also fueled her enthusiasm for learning. According to Davenport, whose esteemed career spans two decades at SIU, students like Goggans exemplify the transformative power of education. Beyond academics, Goggans actively participated in numerous performances and chamber recitals, culminating in a memorable final graduate recital featuring 15 pieces. Her philosophy of embracing every opportunity aligns perfectly with her love for challenges, asserting that saying yes often leads to discovering one's true calling.

Goggans' future shines brightly as she prepares to pursue a doctorate in vocal performance at the University of Northern Colorado. With unwavering confidence instilled through her experiences at SIU, she envisions a career blending teaching and performing. Her journey underscores the importance of self-belief and following one's passions. As Goggans eloquently puts it, genuine happiness stems from creating music that inspires creativity and brings joy—a sentiment that resonates deeply with audiences and fellow musicians alike. Through her story, we are reminded that success lies in staying true to oneself and embracing the opportunities that lead us toward fulfillment.
