A Remarkable Rescue: The 2022 Yquem Vintage
2025-03-18

In a tale of climatic challenges and triumph, the renowned Château d’Yquem managed to produce its extraordinary 2022 vintage. Initially facing dire conditions that almost led to the cancellation of this year's production, a sudden change in weather transformed potential disaster into an exceptional wine harvest. This event not only underscores the resilience of winemaking but also highlights the dedication of those involved in ensuring quality remains paramount.

The Journey Through Uncertainty

During a season fraught with environmental trials including intense heatwaves, prolonged droughts, wildfires nearby, and devastating hailstorms, producing high-quality wine seemed improbable. Located near Bordeaux, Château d’Yquem witnessed these calamities up close as Lorenzo Pasquini, the estate manager, contemplated halting operations entirely due to unfavorable conditions for botrytis development. However, on October 15th, fortune intervened when a powerful southwestern wind swept through, drastically altering atmospheric conditions within mere days. Temperatures soared, drying out the air perfectly for optimal grape concentration needed for noble rot propagation.

This meteorological miracle enabled one of the swiftest yet most hectic harvests ever recorded at Yquem starting from October 16th until completion by October 26th. Despite being perilously close to becoming another non-vintage year following previous skips like 1952, 1972, 1992, and 2012—all coincidentally ending in '2'—the resulting 2022 wine boasts remarkable qualities both quantitatively and qualitatively.

Comprising predominantly Sémillon grapes alongside some Sauvignon Blanc, this blend achieves historical average yields while maintaining impressive residual sugar levels second only to the iconic 1945 vintage. Its aromatic profile includes notes reminiscent of apricots, toasted brioche, saffron, honey, angelica, frangipane, nutty tones, roasted pineapple, crème brulée hints, Seville orange marmalade undertones, candied rose petals, Turkish delight, grapefruit zest, and even a saline finish akin to licorice. Acidity plays a crucial role here enhancing freshness throughout each sip leading towards a long-lasting impression.
