Revitalizing Milwaukee's Theater Hub: An $80 Million Transformation
2025-01-22

The Milwaukee Repertory Theater is undergoing a dramatic transformation that will barely be recognizable to its long-time patrons. The theater, currently stripped down to its bones with seating removed and spaces laid bare, is in the midst of an ambitious $80 million renovation project. This overhaul aims to breathe new life into the historic building at 108 E. Wells St., converting it into the Associated Bank Theater Center. The project includes comprehensive upgrades to both the Powerhouse and Studio theaters, the addition of an education center, and enhancements throughout the complex to improve user experience. Managing Director Melissa Vartanian-Mikaelian recently guided trustees and media on a tour of the construction site, accompanied by representatives from Hunzinger Construction Co., the general contractor overseeing the renovations.

The origins of this project trace back to the building's history as the Oneida Street Power Station, which was donated by WEC Energy Group. Since the Rep moved into the facility in 1987, this marks one of the most significant changes to the venue. The renovation involves not only aesthetic improvements but also structural reinforcements to ensure the building can support all the planned upgrades. One unexpected challenge emerged during the renovation process when workers discovered an abandoned underground electrical vault, previously unmarked on any plans or maps. Addressing this issue required strengthening the shared wall before filling in the space.

The project has been meticulously managed to stay within budget and on schedule. According to Vartanian-Mikaelian, the theater aims to reopen in the newly named Checota Powerhouse Theater by November, with work on the Herro-Franke Studio Theater set to complete in time for a February 2026 production. In the meantime, the Rep has adjusted its performance schedule, relocating shows like "Prelude to a Kiss" to Brookfield’s Wilson Center and "Romeo and Juliet" and "Million Dollar Quartet" to the Marcus Performing Arts Center.

The upcoming season, including the 2025-2026 lineup, will be announced at an event on January 27 at the Pabst Theater. Visitors can look forward to a revitalized theater hub that promises enhanced facilities and a more seamless visitor experience. The Milwaukee Repertory Theater's ambitious renovation project signifies a new chapter for the city's cultural landscape, blending historical charm with modern amenities.
