Reviving the Farmhouse Well: A Journey to Soft Water
2025-02-03

The journey to modernize a farmhouse's water supply can be both challenging and rewarding. When my wife and I moved into our ancestral home over four decades ago, we embarked on a quest to improve its outdated water system. The original setup relied on a cistern fed by rainwater from the roof, which was inconsistent and sometimes contaminated by bird droppings. Seeking a more reliable solution, we decided to install a well.

Hiring professionals for this task proved wise. Torgrude Well Drilling took charge of drilling, and their patriarch assured us that finding water in our area would be straightforward. At 90 feet deep, they struck a gravel bed rich with water, promising an abundant supply even during periods of high usage. However, the water turned out to be excessively hard, filled with minerals like iron. This necessitated installing a water softener to treat the water, significantly improving daily life—from cleaner clothes to softer skin.

Years later, the quality of our water began to decline again. My wife, always particular about appearances, noticed discoloration in light-colored clothing after washing. While I was less concerned about aesthetics, I too missed the luxurious feel of softened water. Determined to solve this issue, I researched water softeners and found a cost-effective solution at a local home improvement store. Despite some initial installation challenges, perseverance led to success. Now, our water is once again clean and soft, making life in our farmhouse as comfortable and pleasant as ever.

This experience underscores the importance of adapting to changing needs and maintaining one's living environment. It also highlights the value of persistence and resourcefulness when faced with challenges. By taking initiative and seeking practical solutions, we not only improved our quality of life but also preserved the legacy of our family’s home.
