The restoration of an iconic three-wheeled vehicle, once used as a unique form of discipline for rugby players, has become a labor of love for students at Northampton College. This distinctive Reliant Rialto was initially found in a dilapidated state in Harlestone Firs, near Northampton, in 2023. Former members of the Northampton Saints rugby club had utilized this peculiar car as a means to penalize teammates for mistakes during training or misconduct. Over time, the vehicle became a symbol of camaraderie and humor within the team.
Efforts to bring this relic back to life have been spearheaded by enthusiastic motor mechanics students. The Rialto's journey from a neglected wreck to a potential showpiece has involved significant work. Initially purchased by the club in 2002 as a playful gesture, it was painted in the team's colors and served as a quirky punishment for players like Ben Cohen, who faced its wrath after performing donuts in the club parking lot. After years of neglect and vandalism, the car was rescued with the help of a local businessman and Lennie Newman, a former player and manager committed to its revival.
The project has seen remarkable progress over the past 18 months. Key components such as the chassis have undergone re-galvanization, while new shock absorbers and steering mechanisms have been installed. The students involved have likened the restoration process to assembling a detailed model kit, enjoying the challenge and satisfaction of bringing the Rialto back to its former glory. For many, this hands-on experience has not only honed their skills but also opened doors to future career opportunities. As the restoration nears completion, the hope is that this once-forgotten piece of rugby history will soon shine again, serving as a testament to perseverance and teamwork.
This restoration project exemplifies the power of community collaboration and the value of preserving unique cultural artifacts. By breathing new life into this historic vehicle, the students are not only honoring the legacy of the Northampton Saints but also showcasing the importance of skill development and dedication. The successful completion of this endeavor will stand as a symbol of resilience and innovation, inspiring others to take on challenges with enthusiasm and creativity.
