A groundbreaking approach to enhancing medical care has emerged, offering hope for patients with severe aortic stenosis (AS). Studies conducted by teams at UC San Francisco and Mass General Brigham indicate that digital notifications sent promptly after echocardiograms can significantly improve patient outcomes. These electronic messages serve as crucial reminders for healthcare providers, ensuring timely interventions such as aortic valve replacements (AVRs) are considered, especially for symptomatic cases.

The effectiveness of this method was demonstrated through a controlled clinical trial involving 940 patients suspected of having severe AS. Participating providers were randomly assigned either to receive these notifications or to continue with standard care protocols. The findings revealed a notable increase in AVR procedures within a year among patients whose caregivers received the alerts—reaching nearly half of the patients compared to just over one-third in the control group. Moreover, recipients of the notifications also experienced slightly extended lifespans and increased referrals to specialists for further testing.
