Revolutionizing Career Paths: Engaging Gen Z in Skilled Trades
2025-04-07

There is a growing recognition among young individuals that traditional college paths are not the only route to success. A significant shift in mindset has emerged, as more members of Generation Z consider skilled trades as viable and rewarding career options. Aaron Hilger, CEO of the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors' National Association (SMACNA), emphasizes this transformation by sharing his personal experiences with his own children. He highlights how discussions about alternative career paths have become more prominent in recent years, thanks to initiatives reaching out to high school students.

The rising costs of higher education play a crucial role in reshaping perceptions about career choices. According to Hilger, when he attended college, tuition fees were relatively affordable. However, today's skyrocketing prices make it challenging for many families to justify such an investment. In response to this trend, SMACNA is collaborating with other organizations to launch the first National Careers In Trades Week from April 7-11. This initiative aims to showcase the advantages of pursuing careers in the trades, emphasizing both financial stability and job satisfaction. Through targeted social media campaigns, they plan to engage Gen Z by highlighting modern technologies used in these fields and focusing on earning potential as a key selling point.

Inspiring stories from participants in programs like the Heavy Metal Summer Experience demonstrate the positive impact of embracing skilled trades. Alejandra Rios, whose father was a carpenter, initially felt disconnected from opportunities in the trades due to lack of exposure. Now in her second year of a journeyman program at Sheet Metal Workers Union Local 66, she champions the phrase "Earn while you learn," encouraging peers to explore similar alternatives. Such narratives underscore the importance of providing accessible pathways for young people seeking meaningful employment without accumulating excessive debt. By fostering awareness and appreciation for skilled trades, society can create diverse opportunities for future generations to thrive professionally and financially.
