In response to this trend, SMACNA is collaborating with other organizations to launch the first National Careers In Trades Week from April 7-11. Through targeted social media campaigns, they plan to engage Gen Z by highlighting modern technologies used in these fields and focusing on earning potential as a key selling point.

Alejandra Rios, whose father was a carpenter, initially felt disconnected from opportunities in the trades due to lack of exposure. Now in her second year of a journeyman program at Sheet Metal Workers Union Local 66, she champions the phrase "Earn while you learn," encouraging peers to explore similar alternatives. Such narratives underscore the importance of providing accessible pathways for young people seeking meaningful employment without accumulating excessive debt. By fostering awareness and appreciation for skilled trades, society can create diverse opportunities for future generations to thrive professionally and financially.
