Revolutionizing Food Rescue: Blanchet House's Sustainable Efforts
2025-04-22

A local Portland organization, Blanchet House, is making significant strides in combating food waste and supporting the environment. Known for its commitment to serving the city's most vulnerable populations, this group has developed an innovative system to manage surplus food. Through partnerships with restaurants, wholesalers, and bakeries, Blanchet House collects high-quality unexpired food donations. These items are then transformed into nutritious meals for those in need. Any leftover scraps are repurposed as animal feed at their rural farm, contributing to a sustainable cycle that benefits both people and the planet.

In the heart of Portland, Blanchet House operates under the leadership of Executive Chef Shannon Chasteen and Executive Director Scott Kerman. Chasteen oversees a dynamic kitchen team that works with daily food donations to create recipes on the fly. The ingredients come from various sources, ensuring that perfectly good food doesn’t go to waste. Before reaching the kitchen, all donations undergo rigorous inspection to uphold the dignity of recipients by providing high-quality meals.

Blanchet House serves approximately 1,200 meals per day, six days a week. To minimize waste further, they’ve implemented a comprehensive plan for managing leftovers. Volunteers transport food scraps to Blanchet Farm, located in Yamhill County. This farm serves as a residential recovery program offering therapeutic work opportunities for men overcoming addiction. Caring for the land and animals forms a critical part of their rehabilitation journey.

This holistic approach to food rescue yielded impressive results last year, diverting 285 tons—or 628,317 pounds—of food from landfills. By embracing environmentally conscious practices, Blanchet House aims to reduce its carbon footprint while addressing food insecurity within the community. Their efforts exemplify how thoughtful planning can transform challenges into opportunities for positive change.

Through dedication and ingenuity, Blanchet House demonstrates that reducing food waste and fostering environmental health can coexist harmoniously. Their model not only provides essential support to those in need but also sets a benchmark for sustainability initiatives nationwide. As they continue refining their methods, the organization remains steadfast in its mission to promote well-being for both humans and the planet.
