Smartwear Trial at Osaka Expo: A Leap Towards Solar-Powered Fashion
2025-03-31

A subsidiary of Toyota, Toyoda Gosei, is set to unveil its innovative solar-powered smart clothing at the Osaka World Exposition in Japan. The trial focuses on testing vests embedded with ultrathin solar cells to evaluate their durability and practicality. These vests, featuring cutting-edge perovskite solar cells developed by Kyoto University spin-off EneCoat Technologies, aim to power small electronic devices such as wearable neck fans. With plans to launch a limited edition later this year, the company seeks feedback from expo attendees to refine the technology for commercial use.

Innovative Collaboration Brings Solar Smartwear Closer to Reality

In the vibrant city of Osaka, during the spring of 2023, Toyoda Gosei embarked on a groundbreaking journey in renewable energy integration. This endeavor involves showcasing prototype vests adorned with advanced solar cells at the upcoming World Exposition starting April 13. Each vest incorporates four perovskite solar cells, crafted by EneCoat Technologies, strategically placed on the back. Staff members at a corporate pavilion will wear these vests, demonstrating their ability to supply electricity to compact gadgets like portable fans.

This project marks a significant collaboration between Toyoda Gosei, primarily known for automotive components, and EneCoat Technologies since an investment partnership formed in 2023. Additional support came from textile innovator Seiren, whose expertise enabled wireless integration of the solar cells into fabric. Toyoda Gosei further contributed by developing the energy storage system necessary for functionality.

The trial aims to gather valuable insights from real-world usage, assessing factors such as durability and user experience, paving the way for potential mass production and market release.

As visitors explore the Healthcare Pavilion at the 2025 Osaka Expo, they will also encounter immersive experiences through augmented reality goggles inspired by popular video games. This blend of innovation showcases the intersection of technology and entertainment, enhancing public engagement.

From a journalist's perspective, this initiative underscores the growing importance of sustainable energy solutions in everyday life. It highlights how industries traditionally focused on manufacturing are adapting to incorporate renewable technologies, fostering a greener future. Such developments not only address environmental concerns but also inspire creativity in product design, pushing boundaries in what wearable technology can achieve. This trial serves as a testament to the collaborative spirit driving technological advancements worldwide.
