Reports indicate that Blizzard is entertaining pitches from several South Korean studios interested in creating new titles within the StarCraft universe. According to an article highlighted by @KoreaXboxnews, four major companies—NCSoft, Nexon, Netmarble, and Krafton—are competing to secure development and publishing rights for potential StarCraft games. These firms have reportedly engaged with Blizzard's headquarters in Irvine, California, presenting their visions for expanding this iconic sci-fi franchise.
The renowned creators of Lineage and Guild Wars, NCSoft, are said to be proposing a role-playing game concept potentially rooted in massive multiplayer online gameplay. Meanwhile, Nexon, known for The First Descendant, has pitched an innovative approach leveraging the StarCraft intellectual property. Netmarble, recognized for Solo Leveling: Arise and Game of Thrones: Kingsroad, aims to craft a mobile adaptation of StarCraft. Lastly, Krafton, famous for PUBG and inZOI, seeks to develop a StarCraft title utilizing their proprietary technology.
While such pitches are common in securing publishing agreements, fans eagerly anticipate any progress in revitalizing the beloved StarCraft universe, given the prolonged hiatus since the last release. Despite inquiries, Activision Blizzard has refrained from commenting on these developments. Additionally, recent reports suggest Blizzard's ongoing efforts toward crafting a third iteration of a StarCraft shooter under the guidance of Dan Hay, a former Far Cry executive producer who joined Blizzard in 2022.
Historically, Blizzard's attempts at producing a StarCraft shooter have encountered setbacks. Notably, StarCraft Ghost, announced in 2002 as a tactical-action console game, was canceled in 2006 following numerous delays. Similarly, another project codenamed Ares met its end in 2019, allowing Blizzard to prioritize Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2. More recently, job postings hint at an upcoming open-world shooter possibly set within the StarCraft realm.
Amidst these endeavors, Blizzard continues to bolster StarCraft's presence through remastered editions like StarCraft: Remastered and StarCraft 2: Campaign Collection now available on Game Pass, along with a crossover collaboration involving Hearthstone. As these initiatives unfold, anticipation builds for what lies ahead in the evolution of the StarCraft saga.
