True Tales Under the Spotlight: The Moth Mainstage in Worcester
2025-04-23

In the world of performing arts, stages serve as a platform for storytelling, whether through music, drama, or political discourse. On April 25, The Hanover Theatre and Conservatory for the Performing Arts will host an event that encapsulates this essence in its purest form—The Moth Mainstage. This unique gathering invites individuals from diverse backgrounds to share personal narratives, akin to recounting experiences at a lively dinner party. Directed by Michelle Jalowski, the event aims to celebrate both the diversity and universality of human life through authentic, unscripted stories.

The Moth originated in 1997 when author George Dawes Greene initiated open mic nights where skilled storytellers could captivate audiences with their tales. Inspired by his Georgia upbringing filled with late-night porch sessions, these gatherings were humorously named after moths attracted to light. Over time, The Moth evolved with the rise of podcasts, releasing weekly episodes featuring live recordings from their events. In 2009, public radio embraced "The Moth Radio Hour," expanding its reach nationwide.

Central to The Moth's mission are live performances. Larger cities host regular open mic sessions where participants can sign up to share stories aligned with a specific theme. Curated Mainstage events, like the upcoming one in Worcester, feature pre-selected storytellers who undergo months of preparation. Notably, each Mainstage includes at least one local voice; singer-songwriter Fanta Vibez will represent Worcester alongside others hailing from places such as Dallas. Prior to the storytelling, Jonathan Kleefield, the theater's organist, will provide a prelude using the historic Mighty Wurlitzer organ.

This year’s theme, “Who do you think you are?”, focuses on identity. Each storyteller crafts their narrative around this central idea without relying on scripts or memorization. Their stories, deeply rooted in personal experience, resonate emotionally due to their authenticity. Jalowski plays a crucial role in refining these narratives, ensuring they fit within the allocated timeframe while emphasizing emotional depth over tangential humor. She explains that effective Moth stories must be action-driven and showcase transformation, often making the selection process challenging yet rewarding.

Past Mainstage events in Worcester have left lasting impressions, remembered fondly by Jalowski for their engaging audiences and impactful stories. Among them were Connie Shin's poignant journey commemorating her father and Ruby Cooper's touching account as a caregiver. These moments highlight why The Moth remains compelling—it transcends mere recounting to explore the significance people derive from their experiences. Despite the daunting prospect of sharing vulnerabilities before strangers, honesty amplifies the power of each tale.

As the lights dim at The Hanover Theatre on April 25, attendees will witness the magic of genuine storytelling unfold. Tickets priced at $61 offer access to an evening where humanity's shared and distinct experiences come alive through words alone, proving once again that stories connect us all.
