In a recent development, law enforcement authorities in Charleston have apprehended two individuals in connection with a string of vehicle-related property crimes that occurred on Johns Island. The incidents took place during the night of February 25th, involving multiple vehicles on Fontana Street. One notable aspect of the case is the theft of a checkbook, which was subsequently used in an attempted fraudulent transaction at a financial institution. Both suspects are currently being held in custody and face various charges related to these offenses.
The investigation began after several residents reported unauthorized access to their vehicles. Among the stolen items was a checkbook belonging to one of the victims. This document later surfaced when someone tried to cash a forged check at South State Bank on Folly Road. Authorities quickly identified and arrested Zachary Louis Longman, aged 34, from James Island, near the bank premises. He was implicated in the fraudulent activity involving the financial institution.
Subsequently, Sean Michael O’Neal, 36, from Johns Island, was also taken into custody on March 5th. In addition to facing charges for crimes against a federally chartered financial institution, O’Neal has been charged with multiple counts of breaking into motor vehicles, property crime enhancements, and tampering with vehicles. Both men were under supervision by the South Carolina Department of Probation, Pardon and Parole for prior offenses related to motor vehicle break-ins.
Law enforcement officials stated that both suspects are now incarcerated at the Al Cannon Detention Center. The arrests highlight the ongoing efforts of local authorities to combat property crimes and ensure community safety. The case underscores the importance of securing personal belongings and vehicles to prevent such incidents from occurring.
