UNCG Women's Tennis Team Faces Western Carolina in Intense SoCon Match

In a recent Southern Conference (SoCon) tennis match, the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's tennis team encountered Western Carolina at the Catamount Athletic Complex. The contest concluded with Western Carolina prevailing 6-1. This setback highlighted Western Carolina's dominance throughout the game, particularly in doubles and singles matches. UNCG now holds a record of 3-13 overall and 0-5 within the SoCon, while Western Carolina stands at 12-7 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Following this match, UNCG prepares to face Wofford on their home turf.

The battle commenced with the doubles segment, where Western Carolina quickly established an advantage by securing victories in two out of three matches. On court three, Madison Schwarz and Angela Perez triumphed over Elisabeth Birkevold and Ella Olexa with a decisive 6-2 scoreline. Although Sydney Bly and Raegan Mitchell managed to equalize the doubles tally momentarily with a 6-4 win against Andrea Redondo and Isabella Sambola on court two, Western Carolina ultimately took the lead when Jade Groen and Chloe Schwarz edged past Olivia Gallagher and Lauren Thomson 7-5 on court one.

Momentum carried into the singles matches as Western Carolina extended their lead further. Groen showcased her prowess by defeating Gallagher 6-3, 6-0 on court one, followed closely by Sambola who overcame Thomson 6-2, 6-0 on court two. Chloe Schwarz sealed the deal for Western Carolina after overcoming Mitchell 6-3, 6-0 on court three. Additional points came from Lui Hokualohi’s victory over Olexa 6-3, 6-2 on court six and Perez’s triumph over Birkevold 6-1, 6-4 on court five. Notably, Bly provided some relief for UNCG by defeating Schwarz 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7) on court four.

As UNCG looks ahead, they will aim to regroup before hosting Wofford at their home courts. With renewed focus, the Spartans hope to improve upon their current standings and demonstrate resilience in their upcoming fixtures.
