Unifying Imaging Data: A Path to Seamless Patient Care
2025-01-27
In a rapidly evolving healthcare landscape, Cleveland-based MetroHealth has embarked on an ambitious journey to revolutionize the way medical images and reports are accessed and shared. Led by Dr. David Kaelber, Chief Health Informatics Officer, and Dr. Eman Jammali, a clinical informatics fellow, this initiative aims to ensure that every stakeholder in patient care can access critical imaging data effortlessly, anytime and anywhere. By implementing cutting-edge technology and fostering collaboration, MetroHealth is setting new standards for patient engagement and clinical excellence.

The Future of Healthcare: Empowering Patients and Providers with Instant Access to Imaging Data

Addressing the Challenge of Fragmented Imaging Systems

The proliferation of imaging modalities and the increasing complexity of healthcare IT systems have created significant challenges for providers and patients alike. Over the past decade, the volume and variety of imaging studies have surged, making it imperative to develop robust solutions for managing and sharing these vital resources. MetroHealth recognized early on that a fragmented approach to imaging data could hinder effective care delivery. To address this issue, the health system introduced a vendor-neutral archive (VNA) and a universal viewer, which have become cornerstones of their strategy. These tools enable seamless integration and accessibility across multiple departments, ensuring that all relevant parties can view and interpret imaging data without unnecessary delays or complications. The implementation of VNA and the universal viewer has been a game-changer for MetroHealth. By consolidating millions of images from seven different departments into a single platform, the health system has significantly improved workflow efficiency and patient outcomes. The integration with Epic’s MyChart portal has further empowered patients, giving them unprecedented access to their own imaging records. This level of transparency not only enhances patient satisfaction but also fosters a more collaborative and informed healthcare environment.

Building a Governance Framework for Imaging Excellence

To ensure the successful deployment of these technologies, MetroHealth established a steering committee tasked with developing comprehensive governance policies. This committee played a pivotal role in standardizing processes across various imaging specialties, prioritizing initiatives, and facilitating cross-departmental collaboration. The result was a unified approach to image management that transcended traditional silos and promoted consistency throughout the organization. One of the key achievements of this governance framework was the establishment of clear guidelines for integrating imaging data into the electronic health record (EHR). By ensuring that 99.9% of all images were ordered through the EHR, MetroHealth minimized discrepancies and streamlined workflows. Additionally, the introduction of hyperlinks at the top of each imaging report provided a direct link to the corresponding image, enabling providers to access visual data instantly. This feature has proven invaluable in enhancing diagnostic accuracy and supporting timely decision-making.

Empowering Patients Through Transparent Access

A central tenet of MetroHealth’s imaging strategy has been to place patients at the forefront of their care experience. Recognizing the importance of patient empowerment, the health system integrated imaging data into its personal health record (PHR), allowing individuals to view their own images alongside the written reports. This move has had a profound impact on patient-provider relationships, as it encourages open communication and shared decision-making.Approximately 80% of MetroHealth’s patients now have access to their imaging results via the PHR, which has led to greater trust and engagement. Patients can review their images on any device—whether a desktop, laptop, smartphone, or tablet—and share them with family members or other healthcare providers as needed. This level of accessibility not only promotes better understanding of medical conditions but also enables patients to take a more active role in their healthcare journey.

Pioneering Innovation in Imaging Integration

MetroHealth’s commitment to innovation has driven continuous improvements in its imaging infrastructure. Over the years, the health system has expanded its VNA and universal viewer capabilities to encompass a wide range of imaging specialties, including radiology, cardiology, endoscopy, urology, ophthalmology, dentistry, OB/GYN, and pathology. Each department has benefited from enhanced interoperability, leading to more efficient workflows and improved patient care. The success of this initiative has not gone unnoticed. At HIMSS25 in Las Vegas, Dr. Kaelber and Dr. Jammali will present their groundbreaking work in a session titled “Imagine Imaging Harmony: The Journey to Overcome Imaging Silos.” This presentation will delve into the challenges faced and the strategies employed to achieve imaging harmony within the health system. Attendees will gain valuable insights into how MetroHealth’s innovative approach has transformed the way imaging data is managed and utilized, ultimately benefiting both providers and patients.

Shaping the Future of Healthcare Delivery

As healthcare continues to evolve, the need for seamless imaging data access will only grow. MetroHealth’s pioneering efforts in this area serve as a model for other organizations seeking to enhance patient care through technology. By breaking down barriers and fostering collaboration, the health system has set a new standard for imaging integration. The future of healthcare delivery lies in harnessing the power of technology to create more connected, efficient, and patient-centered care environments. MetroHealth’s journey is a testament to the transformative potential of innovation in the pursuit of better health outcomes.
