Flag Football: Red Devils Take Flight

The inaugural kickoff of the 2025 flag football season at Somers High School set the stage for what promises to be an unforgettable campaign. Supported by the New York Giants' players Andrew Thomas, Anthony Johnson, and Tyler Nubin, this event not only inspired young athletes but also showcased the commitment and passion driving the Peekskill team forward under the guidance of head coach Tyrone Searight and assistant coach Anthony Turner.In their opening match against Westlake, the Peekskill Red Devils demonstrated formidable skill and teamwork, securing a decisive 25-6 victory. Jealina Searight emerged as a standout player with two interceptions, one leading to a touchdown, alongside a rushing touchdown. Mirian Bonilla and Jayla Smith contributed significantly with their own touchdowns and interception. However, subsequent matches revealed the competitive nature of the league, as evidenced by a narrow loss to Horace Greeley. Upcoming fixtures promise intense rivalries, starting with Brewster and continuing through April against Fox Lane and Woodlands.

Track & Field: Jermaine Carter's Soaring Achievements

Peekskill senior Jermaine Carter has been making waves both locally and nationally. Competing for Westchester Striders, Carter earned All-American honors after placing fifth in the 1,500-meter race during the USATF National Youth Indoor Championships with a time of 4:20.34. This recognition underscores his dedication and prowess, paving the way for his commitment to the University at Buffalo where he aims to excel alongside his sister Brianna.Carter's performance at the Tusker Twilight Invitational further solidified his status as a formidable competitor. Winning the 800-meter run with a time of 2:06.17 and placing ninth in the 1,600-meter race, Carter remains focused on breaking the 1:59 barrier in the 800-meter race before graduation. His contributions extend beyond personal accolades, as he was recently named Peekskill High School's "Athlete of the Month." Additional highlights from the invitational include Greg Tompkins' fourth-place finish in the Novice Boys 400-meter dash and Amanda Nelson's first-place achievement in the Novice Girls 100-meter dash.

Despite a challenging start to the season with a 24-5 loss to Blind Brook, the Peekskill varsity softball team is determined to turn the tide. The opposition saw stellar performances from Bella Montesano and Charlotte Florin, who dominated with impressive batting averages and strategic plays. At the University at Buffalo, Brianna Carter continues to shine, placing sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Fred Hardy Invite. Her younger teammate Juliette Salazar also made significant strides, finishing 17th out of 69 athletes in the women’s 800-meter race at the Texas State Bobcat Invite.These accomplishments reflect the enduring impact of Peekskill's athletic programs and the nurturing environment that propels athletes toward greatness.
