Unveiling Bordeaux's 2024 En Primeur Journey: A Price-Driven Narrative
2025-04-23
This year, the Bordeaux en primeur season has commenced with an intriguing twist. As two prestigious chateaux make their debut releases, the timing presents a unique challenge. Critics are yet to finalize their evaluations from last week’s tastings, leaving price as the pivotal factor influencing this early phase of the campaign.

Discover the Strategic Pricing Dynamics Shaping Bordeaux's Future

Chateau Batailley and Pontet-Canet have initiated the 2024 en primeur season, setting a precedent that might redefine market expectations. With a focus on pricing strategies, these releases highlight the delicate balance between affordability and prestige in the competitive world of fine wines.

The Debut of Chateau Batailley 2024: A Strategic Pricing Move

Chateau Batailley unveiled its 2024 vintage at £300 per case of 12, marking a modest 7.4% reduction from the previous year's release. This positioning places it above certain vintages already bottled, such as 2019 and 2020, while remaining 13.2% higher than the market price for the 2021 edition. Analysts suggest that this pricing strategy may not generate significant excitement within the campaign.

Liv-ex highlighted the cautious approach adopted by Batailley, emphasizing that maintaining such a price point amidst fluctuating market dynamics requires careful consideration. The decision reflects an effort to preserve the chateau’s reputation while navigating the complexities of global demand and consumer sentiment.

Pontet-Canet 2024: Balancing Yield and Value

Pontet-Canet followed suit with its release, priced at €50 ex-chateau or €60 ex-negociant, translating to a recommended retail price of £720 per case of 12 in London. This represents a 9% decrease compared to the 2023 vintage and a substantial 33% drop relative to the 2022 release. Notably, the 2023 vintage experienced a 35% reduction in yield, potentially enhancing interest in the 2024 offering despite its elevated cost.

Critics have praised Pontet-Canet’s latest vintage, hailing it as a standout in Pauillac. Jane Anson described it as “beautifully measured” with a refined elegance characteristic of the region. This assessment underscores the wine's potential for long-term aging, appealing to collectors seeking both quality and investment value.

Belair-Monange Joins the Market: A Premium Offering

Completing today’s trio of releases is Belair-Monange, introduced at €117.6 per bottle in France, equivalent to approximately £1,207 per case of 12 including VAT. Ex-London prices stand at £1,060 per case of 12, reflecting a 10.2% decrease from the 2023 release. Liv-ex noted its position as one of the priciest vintages currently available, necessitating exceptional ratings to justify its cost.

This strategic pricing aims to align Belair-Monange with its esteemed status among Bordeaux wines. Market analysts anticipate that achieving high accolades will be crucial for justifying the premium price tag, ensuring sustained interest from discerning buyers and investors alike.
