2025-04-28
As the curtain falls on Curtis New Music Ensemble's 2024–25 series, audiences are invited to experience a transformative journey through two compelling operatic works. The Gould Rehearsal Hall will host the mesmerizing performances of "Savior" and "Infernal Angel," offering an unparalleled exploration of history's enigmatic figures.

Step Into the Realm Where History Meets Artistry

The Theatrical Majesty of "Savior"

Inspired by the legendary life and untimely demise of Joan of Arc, "Savior" transcends traditional opera boundaries to create a fully immersive theatrical experience. This groundbreaking work, which made its debut in 2018, was crafted under the patronage of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for MusicNOW, with generous backing from the Toulmin Foundation. The production features an extraordinary collaboration between Curtis vocalists Shikta Mukherjee, Juliet Rand, and Jeysla Rosario Santos, whose voices harmonize seamlessly with the pre-recorded narration of William “Sandy” Smillie as The Chronicler.

The intricate layers of "Savior" draw listeners into a world where mysticism and reality intertwine. Each note resonates with the spiritual intensity that defined Joan of Arc’s mission, while the narrative unfolds through a tapestry of soundscapes and visuals. By blending live performance with innovative multimedia elements, this production redefines how audiences perceive historical narratives in contemporary music.

Introducing "Infernal Angel": A World Premiere

Audiences are then transported to another dimension with the world premiere of "Infernal Angel." This hauntingly beautiful piece delves deep into the controversial life of Gille de Rais, a military companion to Joan of Arc who allegedly inspired the chilling tale of Bluebeard. Baritone Ty Bouque embodies the complex character of de Rais, bringing his inner turmoil and dark secrets to life through masterful interpretation.

Supporting him is soprano Maya Mor Mitrani as the Baron (The Devil), whose ethereal presence casts a shadow over the proceedings. Mezzo-soprano Katie Trigg portrays Marceline, The Scholar, adding intellectual depth to the storyline, while tenor Jackson Allen steps into the shoes of François Prelati, an Italian cleric entangled in de Rais' sinister endeavors. Together with the chorus comprising Jeysla Rosario Santos, Shikta Mukherjee, Juliet Rand, Hongrui Ren, Ross Macatangay, and Robert Frazier, they weave a rich tapestry of sound that captures the essence of de Rais’ tumultuous existence.

Creative Collaborations Elevating the Experience

Beyond the stellar cast lies a remarkable creative team dedicated to enhancing every aspect of these productions. Video designer Alex Sopp crafts breathtaking visual backdrops that complement the unfolding drama, while lighting designer Luke Kritzeck ensures each scene is bathed in just the right ambiance. Sound designer Christopher Kriz meticulously orchestrates audio effects to heighten emotional impact, and costume supervisor Catherine Blinn brings authenticity to the characters through historically informed attire.

This synergy among artists underscores the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in modern opera. It exemplifies how technology and tradition can coexist harmoniously, creating experiences that resonate long after the final notes have faded. Such partnerships not only elevate individual performances but also set new standards within the field of performing arts.

A Celebration of Chamber Ensembles

Integral to both "Savior" and "Infernal Angel" is the contribution of Curtis instrumentalists forming the chamber ensemble. Their skillful execution provides the backbone upon which these narratives rest, ensuring that every nuance of the compositions is brought forth with clarity and precision. From delicate string passages to powerful brass accents, their artistry enriches the auditory landscape, making it impossible for listeners to remain unaffected.

These musicians serve as more than accompanists; they are storytellers themselves, contributing vital threads to the larger narrative fabric. Their dedication to excellence mirrors the commitment demonstrated by all participants involved in these projects, reinforcing the notion that great art emerges when passion meets professionalism.
