Walmart's Nationwide Campaign Tackles Food Insecurity in March 2025
2025-03-22

During the month of March 2025, Walmart and Sam’s Clubs locations across the United States will host the annual "Fight Hunger. Spark Change." campaign aimed at addressing food insecurity. This initiative invites customers to contribute towards supporting families struggling with access to adequate nutrition. The campaign features multiple ways for individuals to participate and has a significant presence in Hawaii, where nearly one-third of households face food shortages. Since its inception in 2014, this effort has raised over $206 million for food banks affiliated with Feeding America, including several in Hawaii.

In its twelfth year, the campaign unfolds during a critical period as the demand for food assistance continues to rise. Amy Miller, president and CEO of Hawai‘i Foodbank, highlighted that they currently serve an average of 170,000 people monthly, marking a 13% increase from the previous year. The program offers three distinct methods for public involvement, ensuring broad participation. These include purchasing designated items, donating directly through checkout lanes, or participating in online activities linked to the campaign.

Hawaii serves as a key focal point within this national initiative. Nine Walmart stores and two Sam’s Clubs locations across the islands actively engage their communities in combating food insecurity. Major suppliers such as General Mills, Kraft Heinz, Pepsi, Unilever, and Nestlé also support the campaign, amplifying its impact. Julie Gehrki, president of the Walmart Foundation, emphasized the collaboration between Feeding America, Walmart, and Sam’s Club over the past two decades, which has significantly improved lives in served communities.

Beyond fundraising, the campaign fosters awareness about ongoing challenges related to food accessibility. It encourages community solidarity by inviting customers to contribute not only financially but also through engagement in various supportive activities. This collaborative effort underscores the importance of addressing food insecurity through combined efforts of corporate entities, suppliers, and local communities. By providing diverse opportunities for participation, the campaign aims to ensure that all individuals have access to safe and nutritious food, fostering healthier communities nationwide.
