Wisconsin's Coastal Infrastructure Receives Major Boost with $7 Million in Grants
2025-01-16

The state of Wisconsin has announced a significant investment in its maritime infrastructure, allocating nearly $7 million in grants to enhance and maintain three harbors in the northeastern part of the state. This funding, provided through the harbor assistance program, aims to bolster water commerce and ensure that Wisconsin’s businesses can efficiently transport goods. Governor Tony Evers and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) highlighted the importance of these improvements for both local economies and the state’s global competitiveness. The grants will support various projects, including dredging, dock wall repairs, and the creation of new facilities, all designed to strengthen Wisconsin’s maritime economy and supply chain reliability.

The harbor assistance program underscores the state’s commitment to modernizing its infrastructure. One of the beneficiaries is Fincantieri Marinette Marine, which will receive $3 million to undertake several critical projects. These include dredging operations, repairing dock walls, and installing mooring bollards and fenders. Such improvements are essential for maintaining safe navigation and ensuring vessels can securely dock. The company’s CEO, Marco Galbiati, expressed gratitude for the state’s support, noting that this partnership reflects a shared commitment to improving maritime infrastructure. Over the past three years, Fincantieri has invested over $300 million in upgrading its facilities, aiming to create an efficient and modern shipyard.

In Manitowoc, City Center LLC will use its allocated $1.8 million to construct a load-out pad along the Manitowoc River. This project will facilitate the assembly, testing, and shipping of new portal jibs, enhancing the region’s manufacturing capabilities. Meanwhile, the Port of Green Bay and the Fox River Port Development Site will receive $2 million to install a dock wall, dredge, fill areas behind bulkheads, and regrade property. These efforts will culminate in the creation of a new transload facility at the mouth of the Fox River, further supporting economic development in coastal communities.

Kristina Boardman, Secretary of WisDOT, emphasized that the impact of these grants will extend beyond the immediate regions, benefiting the entire state. By strengthening all modes of transportation, the state aims to improve infrastructure and enhance the quality of life for residents and businesses alike. The investments made in these harbor projects are expected to have far-reaching effects, contributing to a more reliable supply chain and supporting waterborne freight. Ultimately, these enhancements will play a crucial role in positioning Wisconsin as a competitive player in the global economy.
