Lincoln Loecher stands as a beacon of strength for all who know him. From battling a life-threatening condition at birth to thriving despite ongoing medical challenges, this six-year-old exemplifies what it means to live boldly. Through the support of Children’s of Mississippi and the encouragement of the Mississippi State Bulldogs, Lincoln continues to inspire countless others with his zest for life.
In the early days of Lincoln's life, a daunting diagnosis cast a shadow over his future. Posterior urethral valves, a rare urological condition, obstructed his bladder's ability to function properly. At just 17 days old, Lincoln underwent critical surgery to remove the tissue causing the blockage. The procedure was only the beginning of a long road ahead, marked by further interventions and vigilant monitoring.
This congenital defect left irreversible damage in its wake. By the age of two, Lincoln required a second surgery to address complications arising from his condition. Unfortunately, the impact on his kidneys was severe, rendering his right kidney nonfunctional and leaving him with Stage 2 chronic kidney disease. Despite these setbacks, Lincoln's determination never wavered, and he faced each challenge with remarkable resolve.
To ensure Lincoln remains as healthy as possible, he undergoes comprehensive evaluations every three to four months. Pediatric nephrologists and urologists at Children’s of Mississippi meticulously track his progress, striving to preserve the functionality of his remaining kidney. These visits are crucial in managing his condition and delaying the potential need for a kidney transplant.
Beyond medical supervision, Lincoln adheres to a specialized renal diet designed to support his kidney health. Each meal is carefully planned to minimize strain on his already compromised organ. This dietary regimen plays a vital role in maintaining his overall well-being and ensuring he can continue enjoying the activities he loves.
Despite the limitations imposed by his condition, Lincoln leads an active and fulfilling life. He finds joy in outdoor adventures, eagerly pedaling his bike alongside friends and exploring the natural world. His fascination with wild animals fuels endless conversations with his parents, where he enthusiastically shares intriguing facts about his favorite creatures.
Sports hold a special place in Lincoln's heart, reflecting his energetic spirit and competitive nature. With a family deeply connected to Mississippi State University, Lincoln proudly identifies as an honorary Bulldog. This affiliation brings immense pride to both him and his grandparents, who are proud alumni of the institution.
The collaboration between Children’s of Mississippi and the Mississippi State Bulldogs serves as a testament to the power of community in uplifting young heroes like Lincoln. Each week, they honor pediatric patients whose stories embody resilience and optimism. As this week's Kid Coach, Lincoln receives recognition for his incredible journey and the inspiration he provides to all who encounter him.
As Lincoln attends Saturday's game surrounded by supporters, his friends at Children’s of Mississippi cheer fervently for his continued success. Their commitment to championing children's health extends far beyond medical care, fostering an environment where young patients feel valued and celebrated. Through initiatives like the Kid Coach program, these partnerships remind us of the extraordinary courage exhibited daily by pediatric patients across the state.
