The African coffee scene has once again demonstrated its remarkable potential with a series of prestigious events held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. These gatherings brought together some of the continent's most talented individuals and organizations, highlighting their contributions to the global coffee market.
At the heart of these activities was the 2024/2025 Regional Taste of Harvest green coffee competition, an event that celebrated the finest Arabica and Robusta coffees from across Africa. A panel of expert judges evaluated 96 samples originating from eight countries, ultimately selecting winners based on quality and distinctiveness. Notable victories included Ethiopian producers excelling in washed and natural Arabica categories, while Ugandan and Tanzanian entries stood out for robusta and honey-processed varieties. The AFCA’s upcoming webinar will provide further insights into the achievements of these outstanding producers.
In parallel, the Africa Barista Championship showcased the skills of twenty-two baristas representing twelve nations. Judged by a team of fourteen seasoned experts, participants were assessed on technical expertise, creativity, and sensory evaluation. South Africa's Stevo Kühn emerged victorious, followed closely by Uganda's Ibrahim Kiganda and Kenya's Teresia Maina. This championship not only highlights individual talent but also serves as a stepping stone for competitors aiming to excel at the World Barista Championship. Prior to the main event, a two-day barista bootcamp offered invaluable training to over twenty aspiring professionals, enhancing their technical abilities and preparing them for international standards.
The African Fine Coffees Association (AFCA) continues to inspire growth and innovation within the industry. Through initiatives like the Taste of Harvest competition and the Africa Barista Championship, it fosters an environment where both producers and baristas can thrive. These platforms not only celebrate current achievements but also pave the way for future advancements, encouraging continuous learning and collaboration among participants. By promoting excellence and providing access to new markets, AFCA empowers the African coffee community to achieve greater heights globally.
