Asia's Maritime Sector Set for Green Methanol Expansion
2025-04-04

A significant stride in the realm of sustainable maritime fuel solutions is underway as Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) collaborates with Golden Island Pte Ltd. This partnership aims to bolster green methanol supply for bunkering activities centered in Singapore. The initiative highlights a commitment to reducing carbon footprints by utilizing eco-friendly alternatives in shipping logistics.

The upcoming deployment of the Singapore-flagged vessel, Golden Antares, signifies an important milestone in this venture. Equipped with advanced mass flowmeters and a substantial carrying capacity, it will transport Towngas-produced green methanol from a Chinese port back to Singapore. Before its operational debut in mid-2025, the tanker will undergo rigorous testing procedures aligned with Singapore’s stringent technical standards for methanol bunkering operations. Meanwhile, Towngas continues to enhance its production capabilities through cutting-edge technology at its facility in Inner Mongolia, aiming to significantly boost output over the next few years.

This development not only amplifies Towngas’s role as a pioneer in Asia’s green energy landscape but also underscores the potential for widespread adoption of renewable fuels across major maritime hubs. By teaming up with Foran Energy Group, Towngas plans to establish numerous production facilities throughout China, targeting an impressive aggregate annual capacity. Such efforts promise to revolutionize regional shipping practices while promoting environmental stewardship. As Sham Man-fai, COO-Green Fuels & Chemicals of Towngas, articulates, these endeavors solidify their leadership in delivering cleaner energy solutions for tomorrow's maritime industry.
