Building Approvals and Urban Development in Hong Kong

In December, the Buildings Department of Hong Kong made significant progress in approving various types of building plans and issuing occupation permits. The department's activities encompassed residential, commercial, industrial, and community service developments, showcasing a balanced approach to urban planning. A total of 14 building plans were approved, with diverse distribution across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and the New Territories. Additionally, 29 buildings received occupation permits, indicating readiness for occupancy. The department also addressed unauthorized building works, receiving numerous reports and issuing removal orders.

Approval of Building Plans: Diverse Developments Across Regions

The Buildings Department approved 14 new building plans in December, reflecting a strategic focus on different sectors. These approvals spanned three regions: Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and the New Territories. The approved projects included a mix of residential, commercial, industrial, and community service developments, ensuring comprehensive urban growth. The department’s efforts aim to meet the diverse needs of the city’s population while promoting economic development.

Among the approved plans, three projects were designated for residential or mixed-use residential-commercial purposes, providing a total gross floor area of 55,692 square meters across 1,495 units. Four projects were earmarked for commercial use, covering 47,657 square meters of non-domestic space. Industrial and factory developments accounted for four more approvals, supporting manufacturing and logistics sectors. Lastly, three projects focused on community services, enhancing public amenities and social infrastructure. This balanced approval process ensures that each region benefits from well-rounded urban development.

Issuance of Occupation Permits and Addressing Unauthorized Works

In addition to approving new building plans, the Buildings Department issued 29 occupation permits in December. These permits signify that the buildings are ready for occupancy, marking a critical milestone in construction projects. The permits were distributed across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and the New Territories, with eight, nine, and twelve permits issued in each respective area. The certified buildings provide substantial domestic and non-domestic spaces, totaling 377,282 square meters for residential use across 6,121 units and 81,787 square meters for commercial and other uses.

Beyond approvals and permits, the department actively monitored and regulated unauthorized building works. In December, it received 2,427 reports concerning such activities and issued 318 removal orders to ensure compliance with building regulations. This proactive approach underscores the department’s commitment to maintaining safety standards and legal integrity in construction practices. Furthermore, one building project commenced its superstructure works, signaling ongoing development momentum in the city. Overall, the department’s multifaceted efforts contribute to sustainable urban growth and infrastructure improvement in Hong Kong.
