In the heart of Cusco, Peru, a unique café has emerged, challenging traditional norms and empowering women. Founded by Carolina Peralta, Florencia y Fortunata Café is more than just a place to enjoy a cup of coffee; it's a platform for social change. For Peralta, coffee has always been intertwined with moments of joy and celebration. From childhood experiences at local cafés to long hours spent in Lima’s bustling coffee shops, her passion for the industry grew steadily.

Carolina’s vision for a more inclusive coffee culture took shape during her travels. Observing the vibrant coffee scenes abroad, she questioned why her hometown lacked such a dynamic atmosphere. Noticing the absence of women in key roles within Peruvian coffee establishments, she set out to create a space where women could thrive. After visiting the Cajamarca region, she was inspired by the hardworking women on coffee farms who remained largely unseen. This realization fueled her determination to bring their contributions into the spotlight.

Florencia y Fortunata opened its doors in May 2021, named after two influential women in Peralta’s life. The café exclusively hires women and sources its beans from female producers, ensuring their stories are told through every sip. Beyond serving coffee, the establishment runs a social enterprise aimed at closing the gender gap in the industry. Through training programs focused on gender equality, employees gain confidence and advocacy skills, fostering a new standard for women in coffee.

Peralta’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. Collaborations with like-minded brands, such as Hösėg, further amplify her mission. Together, they aim to create a sustainable impact on both the community and environment. Despite challenges, including concerns about the future of coffee farming and fair wages, Peralta remains committed to making a difference. Her ultimate goal is to empower women, build their self-assurance, and pave the way for greater opportunities in the coffee world. Through her work, she celebrates the diversity and connections that coffee brings, inspiring others to do the same.
