Construction Begins for Astro Orbiter's Refurbishment at Magic Kingdom
2025-01-14

In the heart of Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom, significant preparations are underway for the refurbishment of the beloved Astro Orbiter. Since its closure on January 13, 2025, this iconic attraction has been undergoing a transformation, with plans to reopen in summer 2025. A large crane now stands behind construction walls, signaling the start of extensive renovations. The surrounding area has been cordoned off, and visitors can catch glimpses of the ongoing work from nearby attractions like the Peoplemover. Despite the construction, some amenities, such as the Lunching Pad dining location, remain operational, ensuring guests continue to enjoy their visits.

The Astro Orbiter's refurbishment marks an important phase in maintaining the magic of Tomorrowland. The project involves not only the installation of a massive yellow crane but also the erection of grey construction walls that extend into the walkways between the Peoplemover and Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin. These walls provide a clear boundary while allowing essential maintenance work to proceed without disruption. Observers have noted various safety measures in place, including orange cones, cinderblocks, and wooden slats positioned strategically around the site. Yellow scaffolding is also visible, indicating the scale and complexity of the renovation efforts.

Further inspection reveals additional details about the construction setup. Ladders lean against cinder blocks behind the walls, and a wooden pallet and trash bin are visible along the far side. On the right side of the crane, more cinderblocks and wooden slats support the structure. The elevators that typically transport guests to the loading area of the Astro Orbiter are currently blocked off, with control boxes covered to ensure safety during the refurbishment process. Signage posted on the walls informs visitors that all flights have been grounded temporarily while the spacecraft undergoes servicing.

The Astro Orbiter's refurbishment is a crucial step in ensuring the attraction remains a highlight of Tomorrowland. With the scheduled reopening set for summer 2025, Disney Parks aims to deliver an enhanced experience for guests. The ongoing work reflects Disney's commitment to preserving and improving its classic attractions, ensuring they continue to captivate visitors for years to come. As the renovation progresses, anticipation builds for the day when the Astro Orbiter will once again welcome pilots eager to embark on thrilling space adventures.
