The historic Deering Library at Northwestern University is set to embark on its second phase of renovation, following the successful installation of a new elevator that spans all three floors. Deputy University Librarian D.J. Hoek announced that this 92-year-old architectural gem will now focus on upgrading the Martin Reading Room, introducing modern amenities such as an exhibition space for rare books, a study lounge, and two gender-neutral restrooms. The project aims to balance contemporary functionality with historical preservation, ensuring that the library remains a vital resource for students and faculty. The library has been closed for renovations for the first time in over a decade, with plans to reopen in September. The upcoming renovations in the Martin Reading Room are designed to create a more inviting and functional study environment. According to Clare Roccaforte, Director of Marketing and Communications for NU Libraries, the room will feature replicas of original ornate fixtures, along with additional seating to accommodate up to 40 more students. The removal of non-original shelving units will make way for these improvements, aligning with the goal of restoring the room to its authentic form. Moreover, the electrical systems will be updated to support modern lighting and power outlets, enhancing the overall user experience.
A significant aspect of the renovation involves the creation of a new gallery space dedicated to showcasing rare books and manuscripts. Previously, a skylight allowed natural sunlight into the area, which posed a risk of UV damage to delicate materials. To address this, the skylight will be replaced with an artificial laylight that mimics natural daylight while providing controlled lighting conditions. This innovative solution ensures that visitors can enjoy exhibits without compromising the preservation of valuable collections. During the renovation, these special items are temporarily housed in the basement of Main Library, where they remain accessible upon request.
In addition to the physical changes, the staff and librarians have also adapted to temporary relocation across other university libraries. Project Manager Jamie Morris confirmed that the construction progress is on schedule, with the team working closely with union tradespeople to ensure everything proceeds smoothly. Despite some minor challenges, such as the need to shut down electrical services during the elevator installation, the project remains on track for completion by September. Morris expressed hope that the renovated space will inspire further interest in campus development projects, reflecting the university's commitment to enhancing its facilities for future generations.
