Artistic Tribute Unveiled for Guernsey's Liberation Day
2025-04-19

A remarkable artistic endeavor is set to honor the 80th anniversary of Guernsey’s Liberation Day, bringing together diverse perspectives through an exhibition titled "Exile and Return." This project emerged from a chance encounter between artist Rosanne Guille and Reverend Dr. Adrian Datta at Fort Grey. The event will unfold over six weeks starting on May 7, with a special preview held on May 6, located at St Pierre du Bois Church and its adjacent fellowship rooms.

The exhibition draws inspiration from personal narratives tied to the Nazi occupation era, reflecting both those who remained on the island and those who sought refuge elsewhere. Dr. Datta highlighted the significance of this commemorative celebration, noting that as fewer individuals remain who directly experienced the occupation years, it becomes imperative to preserve their stories in meaningful ways. Through visual arts, the collective aims not only to pay tribute but also to establish a lasting legacy of these pivotal moments in history.

This initiative has united twelve talented artists who have delved into family histories, memories, and archival research to craft compelling works. Their efforts underscore a profound exploration of resilience during challenging times. Sponsored by Guernsey Arts, this project exemplifies how creativity can bridge generations and foster remembrance. By engaging deeply with past experiences, the community strengthens its connection to historical roots while celebrating progress and unity today.
