A significant collaboration has emerged from the recent APOS media summit in Bali, as BBC Studios Asia formally unveiled its first co-production with Studio JanChi, a South Korean production house. This exciting venture, titled 12 Seas (working title), is a four-part culinary travel series that underscores BBC Studios' increasing focus on Asian narratives with international appeal, developed through its deepening alliance with the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA).
Scheduled for a 2026 release across Asia on BBC Earth and BBC Player, the forthcoming series promises an immersive journey along the South Korean coastline. Viewers will follow the esteemed Korean-American chef Edward Lee and the celebrated actor Ryu Soo-young as they delve into the country's rich maritime food heritage. The duo will explore age-old customs and methods for preparing seafood, from the traditional Ttulidae technique of harvesting seaweed to the ancestral bamboo trap fishing for anchovies, offering a unique insight into Korea's culinary traditions.
This partnership builds on the previous success of Deep Dive Korea: Song Ji Hyo’s Haenyeo Adventure, BBC Studios Asia’s initial original Korean production. Studio JanChi, renowned for its food-centric documentaries like Korean Pork Belly Rhapsody and A Nation of Kimchi, secured this co-production opportunity after winning a competitive pitch initiated by BBC Studios and KOCCA last year. The series is currently in development, with BBC Studios managing its global distribution outside Korea, while Studio JanChi retains the Korean broadcast rights. This collaboration is a testament to the thriving cultural exchange and the universal appeal of authentic culinary storytelling.
This venture not only enriches the global media landscape with diverse content but also promotes cultural understanding and appreciation for the intricate traditions of Korean cuisine. Such partnerships exemplify how creative forces can unite to produce compelling narratives that resonate across borders, fostering a sense of shared human experience through the exploration of food and heritage.
