An innovative extended reality (XR) adaptation of the Paralympic sport Boccia has been developed by researchers at Osaka Metropolitan University. This version, known as Boccia XR, aims to serve as a rehabilitation tool that enhances both physical and emotional well-being among older adults. The study conducted by Associate Professor Masataka Kataoka’s team reveals that participants experienced improved moods and vitality after engaging in either Boccia XR or traditional boccia. Although no significant difference was observed in lower limb muscle activity between programs, increased activity in the rectus femoris muscle during boccia suggests its potential benefits for knee extension. Designed primarily for indoor environments like hospitals and care facilities, Boccia XR offers practicality without requiring extensive space.
Associate Professor Masataka Kataoka from Osaka Metropolitan University's Graduate School of Rehabilitation Science led a research group focused on exploring how digital adaptations of physical games could assist in rehabilitation. Their project centered around creating an immersive XR version of boccia—a game traditionally played in confined spaces but demanding precision and strategy. By introducing this technology into settings where conventional sports might not be feasible due to spatial constraints, they hoped to provide alternative therapeutic options for seniors recovering from injuries or managing chronic conditions.
The study examined mood changes among individuals over 65 years old before and after participating in three distinct activities: experiencing Boccia XR, playing traditional boccia, and walking on treadmills. Researchers also monitored leg muscle activity throughout these exercises. Findings indicated that those who engaged with either form of boccia reported enhanced feelings of energy and motivation afterward compared to treadmill users. Furthermore, specific muscles involved in extending the knee showed greater activation during gameplay versus walking.
This discovery highlights the dual advantages of incorporating Boccia XR into senior rehabilitation routines—boosting both mental health through enjoyment and physical capabilities via targeted exercise. Since current results focus solely on immediate impacts, future investigations will assess long-term effects across broader demographics while continuously refining the program based on feedback received from ongoing trials.
