Celebrating Art and Music: A Cultural Event at Dordt University
2025-04-15

A vibrant celebration of creativity is set to take place at Dordt University, bringing together the worlds of literature and music in a unique event. On April 15th, the university will host an evening filled with artistic expression, featuring a book launch and a musical performance. The event aims to inspire both the local community and visitors with its rich cultural offerings.

Starting off the evening, the campus will celebrate the literary talents of Sara de Waal, a former student turned faculty member and acclaimed children's author. Guests are invited to join a festive gathering marking the release of her latest work, "The Biggest Smallest Thing." Scheduled for 6:15 P.M., this portion of the event includes a reading session by de Waal herself at 6:30 P.M., where attendees can enjoy excerpts from her new publication. Copies signed by the author will be available for purchase, making it a memorable experience for book enthusiasts.

In addition to the literary showcase, the evening continues with a grand orchestral performance at 7:30 P.M. in the B.J. Haan Auditorium. The Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestra, Sioux County Oratorio Chorus, and Dordt Concert Choir will collaborate to present Brahms’ “Requiem.” This highly anticipated concert, originally planned for 2020 but postponed due to unforeseen circumstances, promises to deliver an unforgettable auditory journey. Tickets priced at $30 provide access to this remarkable fusion of regional talent and classical music.

Art and music have always been powerful mediums for fostering connection and understanding among people. By hosting such events, Dordt University not only celebrates individual achievements but also strengthens communal bonds through shared experiences. Such initiatives highlight the importance of supporting creative endeavors as they contribute significantly to cultural enrichment and societal progress.
