A Celebration of Unity: Wausau's Fifth Annual Juneteenth Event
2025-06-19

An annual event marking a significant moment in history is set to take place in Wausau, Wisconsin. The city will host its fifth Juneteenth celebration, bringing together people from all walks of life. This occasion not only commemorates the official end of slavery in the United States but also serves as an opportunity for reflection and education. Since becoming a federal holiday in 2021, Juneteenth has gained prominence across the nation, including Wisconsin, where it has been recognized since 2009.

This year’s festivities promise a vibrant experience centered around cultural enrichment and community bonding. Held at the Center for the Visual Arts in downtown Wausau, attendees can enjoy free food courtesy of Taste of Jamaica, listen to a keynote speech by Bianca Shaw from Milwaukee, and revel in music that celebrates heritage. Organized by Kayley McColley and other passionate individuals, this event aims to foster inclusivity and understanding among diverse groups within the local population. It runs from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., welcoming everyone irrespective of racial or ethnic backgrounds.

Inspired by the social movements sparked during the George Floyd protests in 2020, McColley emphasizes the importance of maintaining momentum towards positive change. She envisions these gatherings as pivotal moments for both the African American community and broader society to unite under shared values. As flags honoring Juneteenth fly high over state capitals nationwide, they symbolize progress while reminding us of our collective journey toward equality and justice. Through such initiatives, communities like Wausau demonstrate how embracing history fosters growth and strengthens ties between its members.
