During the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims engage in fasting, prayer, and charity. In Dearborn, a local non-profit is making strides not only in feeding the less fortunate but also in addressing food waste within the community. Through their innovative efforts, they repurpose unused meals and provide them to those in need.
The Helping Handzzz Foundation has developed a two-pronged mission: pre-iftar support for families and post-iftar collection of untouched leftovers. Their work continues beyond Ramadan, focusing on major holidays when food surplus is common.
In the bustling parking lot of the Islamic Institute of Knowledge in Dearborn, volunteers from the Helping Handzzz Foundation gather late at night to repackage home-cooked meals. Under the leadership of Nadine Daoud, this initiative provides nearly 400 meals weekly to individuals who are homeless or less fortunate. The foundation's mission centers around preventing food waste while supporting vulnerable populations.
Each evening, after sunset prayers, the team collects untouched leftovers from gatherings where people break their fasts. These meals are thoughtfully prepared with health in mind, offering proteins, vegetables, rice, desserts, and beverages. Volunteers then redistribute these carefully packaged meals to those in need both locally and in downtown Detroit. Nadine's vision began in 2017 when she noticed the significant amount of leftover food during her family’s iftar celebrations. Her commitment stems from Islamic teachings that emphasize valuing resources and avoiding waste.
While Ramadan serves as a focal point for their activities, the Helping Handzzz Foundation continues its efforts year-round. They concentrate on major holidays such as Thanksgiving, Eid, and Christmas, encouraging communities to donate excess food rather than discard it. This approach ensures that surplus meals reach those struggling with hunger even outside of Ramadan.
By organizing campaigns during festive seasons, the foundation educates the public about reducing food waste while simultaneously aiding those facing food insecurity. After successfully feeding the homeless population on Detroit streets each night, the remaining meals are delivered to shelters. By 11:30 PM, Nadine and her dedicated team wrap up another productive evening, ready to tackle the next day's challenges.
