Deputy Chief Corey Adamski of the Naples Fire Department revealed that the call came in at around 10 a.m. The worker, engaged in work on the roof of a private home, unfortunately lost his balance and plummeted from the third story to the second. As a result, he sustained significant leg injuries and was unable to safely descend the ladder.
A remarkable team of nine fire fighters from both Naples Fire and North Collier Fire collaborated seamlessly. They employed a specialized rescue technique, using a Stokes basket. This metal frame encircled the patient, firmly securing them inside. Subsequently, the basket was attached to a ladder or an aerial device based on the setup of the fire truck.
The department emphasized that such rescues are not an uncommon occurrence, particularly during the busy construction season. In fact, they respond to about a dozen similar calls each year, highlighting the critical need for preparedness in handling such accidents. It serves as a stark reminder of the potential risks involved in construction work.
Residents were also reminded of the significance of safety when working on roofs. Deputy Chief Adamski stressed that even professionals rely on safety lines to prevent falls. He encouraged residents to find ways to remain on the ladder rather than venturing onto the roof. If possible, working directly from the ladder can avoid the need to get on the roof altogether.
