A remarkable collaboration between two George Washington University students, Carolina Carmo and Max Cohen, is set to highlight the dynamic music community in Washington DC. Both deeply involved in GW's student-run radio station WRGW, they have spearheaded a compilation album titled Plenty Happening. This project unites 27 local artists, offering fresh, previously unreleased tracks that celebrate the city’s diverse musical talents. The release will take place on May 9th at the Black Cat, featuring performances from several bands, while all proceeds benefit gender-affirming care at the Whitman-Walker clinic.

This endeavor began with an idea sparked during Carmo's preparation for an interview with Connor Murray, owner of Pennsylvania label Crafted Sounds. Inspired by Murray's previous work creating compilations in Pittsburgh, Carmo envisioned a similar initiative for DC. Partnering with Cohen, they reached out to friends, past collaborators, and admired musicians to contribute. Some artists recorded new material in the studio under Cohen's guidance, while others submitted unreleased works. For both creators, this compilation not only honors the thriving music scene but also symbolizes its resurgence post-pandemic. "Watching the scene recover over the years has been incredible," Cohen remarks, emphasizing their commitment to preserving the DIY ethos that defines it.

As graduating seniors, Cohen and Carmo see this project as a poignant farewell to the community that shaped them. It encapsulates their experiences and brings together various elements into one cohesive effort. Beyond personal significance, the album addresses contemporary issues through its content and charitable focus. One track critiques recent political turmoil, while participation from queer bands underscores the importance of accessible healthcare.
