An employee from FlightSafety International, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, has made history by securing the company's elusive $1 million prize. This year’s bracket challenge saw participants predict outcomes for games in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. Among the 392,000 employees of Berkshire Hathaway, only one managed to correctly forecast 31 out of 32 first-round matches, marking an extraordinary achievement in this nearly decade-long contest.
Although 12 employees accurately predicted the same number of games, the eventual winner maintained an impressive streak of 29 consecutive correct calls before stumbling on game 30. The individual continued their success into the second round, predicting 13 more games correctly, bringing their total to 44 out of the first 45 games. Statistically, achieving such precision is akin to defying astronomical odds, roughly one in 780 billion if each game were treated as a random outcome. Warren Buffett expressed satisfaction with the competition's design, noting that adjustments made it more attainable while still being challenging.
This remarkable win underscores the spirit of friendly competition and the thrill of unexpected triumphs. Since launching the internal contest in 2016, Berkshire Hathaway has continually sought ways to engage its workforce through sports predictions. Initially offering a lifetime annual prize of up to $1 million, the challenge has evolved over the years without yielding a grand prize victor until now. Buffett, who remains committed to rewarding participants during his tenure, acknowledges the excitement such rewards generate within the organization. Despite not knowing the identity of this year's winner, he appreciates their preference for anonymity, highlighting respect for personal privacy amidst corporate celebrations.
