Emporia's Vibrant Art Scene Takes Center Stage on First Friday
2025-04-30

This May, art enthusiasts in Emporia will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a vibrant cultural experience. The First Friday Art Walk, set for May 2 from 5 to 8 p.m., transforms downtown into an open-air gallery. Sponsored by Flint Hills Technical College, this event highlights student creativity through various exhibits and performances. Featured attractions include the FHTC Graphic Arts Student Showcase, live music, interactive art demonstrations, and more. Participants can explore diverse venues, collect stamps in their passports, and enter prize drawings for engaging with the local art community.

The spotlight of the evening shines on the creative talents of students from Flint Hills Technical College. At The Axe Shedd, located at 616 Commercial Street, visitors will encounter captivating works by Brooklyn Crowell and Julia Brunner. This venue serves as a hub where attendees can begin or enhance their artistic journey. Moreover, additional student creations are available for viewing, including the ESU Graphic Design Senior Show and contributions from the KU Illustration Club.

Beyond student showcases, the event offers a rich tapestry of experiences. New exhibitions at Trox Gallery and Gifts, along with those hosted by the Emporia Arts Council galleries, promise to captivate audiences. Live music performances and the ESU Steamroller Printmaking Event add dynamic elements to the evening. These components collectively create an immersive environment that celebrates the power of art in action.

Engaging with the community is rewarded through interactive participation. Attendees who secure stamps at the presenting venue and seven other locations qualify for the Passport Prize drawing. Those who visit every participating artist and venue receive an extra chance to win a $50 Main Street Gift Certificate. The excitement culminates with the prize drawings held at Mulready’s Pub at 8:30 p.m., concluding a memorable night dedicated to the arts.

As the sun sets over Emporia, the city comes alive with creativity and camaraderie. This event not only highlights the burgeoning talent within the community but also fosters connections among artists, students, and visitors. By exploring the myriad exhibits and performances, participants contribute to the flourishing art scene that defines downtown Emporia.
