The United Way of Greater Knoxville operates 16 community school sites across Knox County, partnering with nearly 400 organizations to provide comprehensive services to families. The initiative focuses on extending support beyond academic boundaries, ensuring that students receive holistic care. During the 2023-2024 school year, the program reached over 6,400 students, thanks to the dedication of 393 donors, volunteers, and community supporters. These collaborations have been instrumental in offering food security, after-school programs, and vocational training, creating a nurturing environment for local youth.In June 2024, a “thank you” breakfast celebrated the achievements of this initiative. Chrystal Armstrong Brown emphasized the importance of collective effort, stating that the success would not have been possible without the contributions from dedicated champions. The event highlighted the transformative impact of such partnerships, reinforcing the belief that together, communities can achieve remarkable results.

Building Stronger Futures Together

Jon Rysewyk, Superintendent of Knox County Schools, praised the collaborative spirit that has driven the Community Schools Initiative. He underscored the necessity of community involvement, noting that no single entity could accomplish this work alone. Cindy Sanford, principal of Beaumont Magnet Academy, echoed these sentiments, commending United Way for its pivotal role in supporting families beyond academic pursuits. The initiative ensures that students and families receive comprehensive care, addressing both immediate needs and long-term goals.

Extending Support Beyond Education

Food City’s generosity extends further through its support of Project Help, a CAC-administered nonprofit providing emergency energy assistance. Donations collected at any Food City or Home Federal Bank location until February 4, 2025, will help vulnerable families stay safe and warm during the heating season. This program targets elderly individuals, those facing job loss, injury, or disability, offering them much-needed relief. Eligible applicants can apply for assistance via CAC or the Low Income Energy Assistance Program, ensuring that no one is left behind in times of crisis.
