The 'Global Guardians: Youth for Pandemic Preparedness' summer camp, orchestrated through a dynamic partnership involving the Global Virus Network (GVN), the University of South Florida (USF) Youth Experiences, and the Hillsborough County Public Schools STEM Department, successfully brought together bright young minds with world-renowned experts in virology and public health. Over three days, 14 high school students engaged in a series of captivating activities, including interactive sessions, laboratory and hospital visits, and collaborative group exercises. These aspiring scientists explored essential topics such as how viruses spread, methods for identifying disease outbreaks, the impact of false information in media, and various career paths within the field of virology. Guidance was provided by specialists from GVN, USF, Tampa General Hospital, and different divisions of the Florida Department of Health. A significant highlight was a live discussion with Dr. Robert C. Gallo, co-founder and international scientific director of the GVN, widely recognized for his co-discovery of HIV. He shared his early scientific journey and addressed the challenges posed by scientific misinformation, encouraging students to pursue truth and follow their intellectual curiosity. The camp also featured an enlightening tour of Tampa General's CareComm, a cutting-edge command center for hospital efficiency and patient safety, alongside practical demonstrations of viral transmission, diagnostic testing, and vector surveillance.
