An upcoming performance event in Ithaca will bring together two distinct yet interconnected artistic expressions. The first is "International Lover," a captivating theatrical experience set to premiere in June 2025, featuring Troy Lingelbach's journey of self-acceptance through aerial trapeze work, dance, and performance art. This wordless production delves into themes of gender, identity, addiction, and injury, all underscored by an eclectic musical score blending rock-and-roll, jazz, funk, and Prince-inspired tracks. Meanwhile, "Crossovers" explores the concept of human consciousness and the nature of existence through the interpretations of Robin Guiver and Jim Self, two accomplished movement artists from Ithaca. Their collaboration showcases diverse forms of expression, ranging from acrobatic dance and physical theater to modern and post-modern techniques.
Troy Lingelbach's "International Lover" takes audiences on an emotional journey that reveals the internal conflicts faced by the artist as they grapple with their mind, body, and spirit. First introduced at the 2024 Hupstate Circus Festival, this piece has since captivated New York City audiences with its sold-out debut at House of Yes. As it prepares for its presentation at the inaugural Philadelphia Contemporary Circus Festival in May 2025, the show continues to evolve, inviting viewers into previously unseen aspects of Lingelbach's personal narrative. The performance art form uses no spoken dialogue, relying instead on powerful movements and evocative music to convey complex emotions and ideas.
Complementing "International Lover" is "Crossovers," which examines the multifaceted states of human consciousness. Through their unique perspectives, Robin Guiver and Jim Self delve into themes such as awareness within one's own body, empathy towards others' experiences, and philosophical musings on life beyond earthly existence. Both artists draw upon extensive backgrounds in various disciplines, including acrobatics, physical theater, modern dance, and performance storytelling. Guiver, recently relocated from the UK, brings a wealth of experience in film, television, and live theater, while also nurturing hobbies like board gaming and science fiction. On the other hand, Self, recognized for his eccentricity and innovation, boasts accolades such as winning the prestigious Bessie Award and serving as Cornell University's dance faculty for over two decades.
The success of these performances would not be possible without generous support from multiple sources. Funding for June Dance 2025 comes partly from the Statewide Community Regrant program, facilitated by the New York State Council on the Arts under the auspices of the Governor’s office and NYS Legislature, managed locally by the Community Arts Partnership of Tompkins County. Additional backing arrives courtesy of NYS DanceForce, a partner organization of NYSCA, along with contributions from The Ithaca Savage Club.
This series of performances promises to deliver profound insights into human nature through innovative use of movement and sound. By merging diverse artistic traditions, "International Lover" and "Crossovers" create opportunities for reflection and connection, offering audiences unforgettable encounters filled with emotion and thought-provoking imagery. Together, these works celebrate the power of creativity to transcend boundaries and inspire transformation.
