Final Curtain at Source Theatre: Constellation's "Head Over Heels" Celebrates Love and Possibility
2025-05-08

Constellation Theatre Company bids farewell to its long-standing home, the Source Theatre, with a vibrant production of "Head Over Heels." This rock musical, inspired by Sir Philip Sidney’s "The Arcadia" and featuring music by the Go-Go’s, weaves a tale of love, prophecy, and transformation. Set in the fictional kingdom of Arcadia, the story follows King Basilius, Queen Gynecia, and their daughters as they navigate challenges posed by an oracle’s prophecies. Directed by Allison Arkell Stockman, the show delivers an exhilarating blend of humor, romance, and high-energy performances, leaving audiences enchanted.

In this imaginative production, the enchanting world of Arcadia comes alive through Samuel Klaas’ scenic design, which transforms the intimate theater space into a mystical realm filled with ivy-covered walls and hidden passageways. The narrative centers on royal siblings Pamela and Philoclea, whose romantic pursuits intertwine with ominous predictions from Pythio, the enigmatic oracle. As the royal family seeks refuge in Bohemia after hearing these forebodings, their journey becomes one of self-discovery and connection.

The heart of the performance lies in its dynamic cast, led by Julia Link as the confident and vocally stunning Pamela, alongside Ariana Caldwell’s nuanced portrayal of her sister Philoclea. Harrison Smith brings charm and sincerity to Musidorus, while Nico Ochoa captivates as the commanding Pythio. Oscar Salvador Jr., Fran Tapia, and Stephen Russell Murray deliver standout performances as Basilius, Gynecia, and Dametas respectively, infusing the story with both gravitas and levity.

Adding layers of depth is the ensemble trio—Jordan Essex, Caroline Graham, and Cristen Young—who seamlessly transition between multiple roles and choreographed sequences designed by Maurice Johnson. Their versatility shines particularly in numbers like “Mad About You,” where they embody everything from courtiers to playful sheep. Meanwhile, Rebecca Ballinger steals scenes as Mopsa, delivering heartfelt moments such as the revelatory duet “Automatic Rainy Day.”

Under the baton of Music Director Walter “Bobby” McCoy, the pit orchestra breathes life into iconic Go-Go’s tracks, creating an electrifying atmosphere that resonates throughout the small venue. Standout songs include “Beautiful,” showcasing Pamela’s vocal prowess, and “Here You Are,” a poignant finale that grounds the fantastical elements in raw emotion. Costume designs by Frank Labovitz further enhance the visual spectacle, while Matthew Pauli’s puppetry adds whimsy during scenes involving slithering serpents.

As Constellation Theatre Company closes its chapter at the Source Theatre, "Head Over Heels" stands as a testament to the company’s commitment to creativity and joy. This final production not only celebrates the art of storytelling but also leaves a lasting impression on the community it has served for so many years. With tickets still available until June 1, 2025, there’s ample opportunity for audiences to experience this jubilant ode to love before it concludes its run.
